SAND PEARLS
Sculptural Seating
This sculptural seating “Sand Pearls” draw inspiration from the traditional iconic object of prayer and meditation beads in various cultures. Scaled into a large sculpture, it embodies ver- satility, flexibility and playfulness due to its multi-functional use serving as a seating or a table, and its movable and dynamic layout which can be endless. It encourages meditative moments of stillness as well as moments of group interaction and community exchange.
The desgin was entirely and meticulously handcrafted by local artisans in Lebanon. An innova- tive texture we have been experimenting with for months that consists of Lebanese sand grind- ed with the remnants of crushed resin waste is recycled and molded into spheres. By using raw materials and testing their limits, the designs evolve within the production phase aspiring me to embrace all surprises and accidents.. It highlights a creative process associated with chaos and form, randomness and precision, unruly and controlled, spirit and matter, and natural vs man- made. The experiments yielded an innovative texture which stimualtes a sense of curiosity and touch to the viewers.
Traditional trimming curtain cords in silk are braided together and intertwine the symbolic 7 “pearls”. This work merges art, craftsmanship, functionality and sustainability and emphasizes the union between heritage and modernity.
